Write into the Week: March 16, 2025

Elle LaMarca  |  March 16, 2025  |

“A creative life is an amplified life. It’s a bigger life, a happier life, an expanded life, and a hell of a lot more interesting life. Living in this manner—continually and stubbornly bringing forth the jewels that are hidden within you—is a fine art, in and of itself.”

–Elizabeth Gilbert

Writing Prompt

If creativity is the key to a bigger, more interesting life, what does that life look like? Write a piece that follows a character (or yourself) on a journey where creativity leads the way. Consider both the struggles and the triumphs (big and small) along the road of a creative life.

Reading Recommendations:

Fiction:

  • The Rememberer” by Aimee Bender for The Missouri Review. A surreal, poignant short story about love, loss, and transformation, in which a woman watches her lover, Ben, evolve backward through time, physically becoming more and more primitive. This piece plays with reality and metaphor in a way that highlights the power of storytelling to reshape our understanding of life.

Nonfiction:

  • My Mustache, My Self” by Wesley Morris. Morris weaves a riveting, sometimes funny, often probing and moving essay about what might be the most boring topic — growing a pandemic mustache.
