Publishing short fiction in literary journals and magazines requires a special kind of storytelling: stories that are vivid, focused, emotionally resonant from the first line, and compelling enough to hold a reader’s attention all the way through. In this course, you’ll learn how to craft, revise, and submit short stories designed for publication—while strengthening the skills that make your fiction more engaging on the page.
You’ll draft two short stories over the six weeks, then choose one to revise more deeply with written feedback from me and your peers, plus discussion during our live Zoom calls. Your stories may be brand new, or drafts waiting in your drawer for new life.
You’ll also complete craft exercises designed to make your stories stronger, sharper, and more publishable: tightening your prose, developing memorable characters, creating vivid dialogue, and building the kind of narrative momentum that keeps readers turning pages. I’ll share inspiring examples from literature to help you hone these skills, and our workshops will be supportive, constructive, and informative.
We’ll also cover the practical side of publishing. You’ll research literary magazines that may be a strong fit for your work, and in the final weeks, we’ll discuss cover letters, bios, simultaneous submissions, submission tracking, and the kinds of responses you can expect. The trick to writing is to keep doing it, and submission works much the same way.
By the end of the course, you’ll have two fresh stories, a clearer roadmap for submitting your work, and a more confident understanding of how to keep moving forward as a writer. Expect a high-energy, entertaining experience that will make you a better, more informed, and more confident writer.
Who This Course is For:
This course works for fiction writers at all levels of experience. You can use short stories you’ve already written and want to revise, or create from scratch.
Learning and Writing Goals
Learning Goals
In this course, you will learn:
- Where to find the true beginning of your story, and how to fix an ending that doesn’t hang right.
- How to hear dialogue everywhere, and use it in your stories.
- Best submission practices for the journals publishing what you’re writing.
Writing Goals
- Two short stories, 3,000–6000 words each. Both can be revisions of previously written stories, but you should revise at least one in our workshop.
- Submission packets designed for at least three literary journals of your choice.
Zoom Schedule
We will meet on Zoom on Wednesdays from 6:00-8:00 PM Eastern time.
Weekly Syllabus
Week One: Where Are My Readers?
Many wonderful stories don’t find homes because they haven’t been sent to the right neighborhood. This week you’ll explore literary journals that publish what you’re writing. In our Zoom, we’ll share ideas about this as we get to know each other. In a quick writing exercise, we’ll generate a fan list for discussion. Yes, you have fans. Finally, everyone will choose a submission spot for the workshop that begins on the third week of our course.
Assignments
1) Research magazines to find your literary “neighborhoods.” I’ll send you home with a handout to get you started.
2) Write 3000 words of your first story. Messy is fine –– you won’t be submitting this draft, but you’ll need it for our craft lesson. Print this out if you can. Bring highlighters and a pen to class.
Week Two: Where Does My Story Really Begin?
Craft Lesson #1: Finding your first paragraph. If you printed out your 3000 words, you’ll have the opportunity to rip some pages, which can be very satisfying. Craft Lesson #2: Power sentences. You’ll choose some sentences in your 3000 words to clarify and tighten. We’ll finish this class with a discussion about the results of our research on literary magazines.
Assignments:
1) Submit for workshop #1
2) Write feedback on the first submissions. There’s a handout for this.
3) Do the Eavesdrop Exercise. There’s a handout for this too.
Week Three: Putting the Cart Before the Horse, from Dialogue to Character
Craft Lesson #3 After we read the eavesdrop assignments aloud, without tag lines, we’ll do a group brainstorm on creating characters from dialogue. I’ll share some of my experience with character creation, including ways to mask characters based on friends and family. The second half of the class is devoted to the workshop.
Assignments:
1) Submit for workshop #2.
2) Write feedback on submissions.
3) In one page, write a scene in which three characters are in a conflict. For this exercise, you can use previous work or create something new.
Week Four: Now we're writing!
For the next two weeks, we’ll be hitting the workshop hard to get our stories ready for to submit for publication. After reading aloud and discussing the homework exercise, we’ll move into the workshop.
Assignments:
1) Submit for workshop #3.
2) Give feedback.
Week Five: Revise to the Finish.
Craft talk: We’ll cover a few important things about revision, including ways to fix an ending that doesn’t quite do its job. Then we’ll jump into the final workshop, #4.
Assignments:
1) I’ll be sending you out today with a list of fiction writing “bloopers.” Self-diagnose your own story to see if you can catch any of these and be prepared to report how you fixed them.
2) Write tquery letters and bios for the journals you’ve chosen for submission.
3) Submit for Workshop #4.
4) Give feedback.
Week Six: Party with Balloons and Cupcakes!
After the blooper report, we’ll finish our last workshop. Then we’ll read and discuss tour submission packets and give feedback. We’ll finish the course with a Q & A. Goodbye with a wave to the fans!

Student Feedback for Melanie Sumner:
I was worried about taking a course from a published novelist, but Melanie is so down to earth and easy to work with. She made me feel confident and taught me so much. Plus she has a great sense of humor. Amanda Wong
Melanie is one of those teachers who makes you want to do your best work. I thought I knew a lot about creative writing, but she showed me ways to make my story pop off the page. She is professional and encouraging. Lorenzo Sanchez
What a great class! We learned how to put our short stories together piece by piece and had a blast. At the end of the class I had some new friends and a short story I’m proud to send out for publication. Kyle Lindberg
I thought I was too old to become a writer, but it’s always been my dream. With Melanie’s helpful feedback and encouragement, I’ve written two short stories and outlined a novel. Mavis Bridgewater
